Movie Review Moday: The Avengers

The Avengers (2012)

Synopsis: Marvel Studios delivers the ultimate comic-book film, which ties together such characters as Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) for a big-screen franchise team-up like no other. Taking center stage this time is Nick Fury (played once again by the note-perfect Samuel L. Jackson), leader of the peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Fury, along with former Russian spy Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), recruits a super team to combat Thor's ever-deceptive brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) after he brainwashes ace archer Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) while stealing a cosmic cube from an underground base. Thus the heroes must learn to work together alongside outlaw scientist Bruce Banner (Ruffalo), who can track down the artifact's gamma signals when he's not hulking out into a giant green monster. Show runner Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly) adapted and helmed the script by Zak Penn. (Fandango)

Tanisha's Review: This year, I've become such a huge Marvel fan. I don't know what it was. One minute I was obsessed with Spiderman and Wolverine, and next it was Iron Man. From Iron Man it was Thor. Once I saw they had a movie that included all of them, I just had to see it.
This movie was full of action, suspense, and humor. I think most people watched for Tony Stark, at least I know I did. But this movie was more than him. It explained the story of S.H.I.E.L.D. Especially since I started the movies out of order. I watched the Avengers first, and then obsessed with Tony Stark. I recommend this movie to anyone of all ages. I think it has different elements for everyone to enjoy.

I give this movie a 5 out of 5 stars.

Movie Review Monday: Pitch Perfect

Pitch Perfect (2012)

Synopsis: TA feisty coed joins a collegiate a cappella group and upgrades their song selection for the 21st century during the run-up to a major competition in this melodic comedy from Tony-nominated Avenue Q director Jason Moore. Drifting past the various cliques after arriving at college, Beca (Anna Kendrick) pays more attention to the jams pumping in her headphones than the people she passes on her way to class. But all that changes the moment she stumbles into the one place where every misfit has a voice -- the campus a cappella group. Although the competition amongst the singers proves surprisingly fierce, there's just one aspect of the group Beca can't wrap her head around: All of the songs they perform are at least a decade old. Convinced that they can do better by adding some contemporary tunes into the mix, Beca whips up an exciting new set list that will set the group apart and leave their rivals in the dust. Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, and Rebel Wilson co-star. (Fandango)

Tanisha's Review: I've seen this movie more times than I should, and every time, it's like I haven't seen it. Pitch Perfect is a great movie "gleeks", music lovers, and comedy lovers. Watching this movie, it is quite likely to laugh your ass off. Yes, it has predictable moments, but still worth watching.

My favorite character was Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson). She's honest, hilarious, and brilliant. And just wait until you hear her big secret, you'll die of laughter.

Rumor has it, part two will be released in 2015, I cannot wait. But all in all, watch this movie, and if you've seen it, watch again.

I give this movie a 5 out of 5 stars.

Movie Review Monday: Star Trek Into Darkness

Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013)

Synopsis: The Star Trek franchise continues with this follow-up to 2009's J.J. Abrams-directed reboot. Abrams returns to direct from a script by Damon Lindelof and the writing team of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. The crew of the Enterprise engages in an epic battle of good versus evil after being summoned home, only to discover Starfleet in ruins, and they venture into a war zone to find the powerful villain (Sherlock's Benedict Cumberbatch) responsible for the devastation (Fandango)

Tanisha's Review: This is one of the best films of 2013, no ifs, ands or buts about it. I was eager to see to this movie because my favorite actor Benedict Cumberbatch was starring as the evil Khan. But I was very impressed with this franchise. They are making a killing off the revamping of the series. I think they did a great job continuing from the 2009 film. (Which I saw a week before seeing this one.) I like Star Trek, and in my opinion, it's a lot easier to follow than Star Wars.

This movie was truly a blockbuster hit, and even if you haven't seen the TV episodes, you can still understand whats going on. Full of amazing action, and great wit. Also, seeing Captain Kirk, and Spock becoming closer was such a tear-jerker.  J.J. Abrams did an spectacular job, and I can't to see more of his films.

Why I think you should see this? Benedict. Cumberbatch. And then go on Netflix and watch him on Sherlock.

I give this movie a 5 our of 5 stars.

Movie Review Monday: Eat Pray Love

Eat Pray Love  (2010)

Synopsis: Liz Gilbert (Roberts) had everything a modern woman is supposed to dream of having - a husband, a house, a successful career - yet like so many others, she found herself lost, confused, and searching for what she really wanted in life. Newly divorced and at a crossroads, Gilbert steps out of her comfort zone, risking everything to change her life, embarking on a journey around the world that becomes a quest for self-discovery. In her travels, she discovers the true pleasure of nourishment by eating in Italy; the power of prayer in India, and, finally and unexpectedly, the inner peace and balance of true love in Bali.(From IMDb)

Tanisha's Review: Out of every movie I've seen in my life, this has to be my favorite. I've probably seen this movie more times than I should. Not a lot of people know this movie is based on a true story, and it's very inspirational. Everyone has that little part of them inside that wished they could just pack up and go away for a year, and that's exactly what Elizabeth Gilbert (author of Eat Pray Love) did. Julia Roberts played an awesome role, that quite frankly, seemed to be written for her. The best part of the movie is we got a chance to experience the different cultures of Italy, Bali and India.
This movie is about finding yourself. Finding that missing piece. She reflected on her life, saw that something was missing, and did something about it.

Check out the book Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert also.

I give this movie a 5 out of 5 stars.

Movie Review Monday: Identity Thief

Identity Thief (2013)

Synopsis: An accounts representative embarks on a frantic quest to reclaim his identity from the Orlando thief who stole it and destroyed his credit by embarking on a massive spending spree in this comedy starring Jason Bateman (Arrested Development,Horrible Bosses) and Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids). Sandy Bigelow Patterson (Bateman) has a problem. A Denver family man who's always been responsible with his personal finances, he is shocked to learn that his credit score is in shambles. But it gets worse -- if he can't clear his name in a week, the mix-up could very well cost him his job. Fortunately Sandy is in luck; after the unrepentant Florida fraudster (McCarthy) who stole his identity causes a stir in a club and misses her court date, Sandy is arrested and promptly released when detectives request a mug shot, and realize their mistake. When the police refuse to offer any help, Sandy realizes that his only choice is to catch the impostor himself and bring her back to Denver to face justice. Unfortunately, this wily thief isn't going down without a fight, and with a grizzled skip tracer (Robert Patrick) and a pair of vicious gangsters (Génesis Rodríguez and T.I.) determined to get the fake Sandy first, every step along the way will be a struggle. (From Fandango)

Tanisha's Review: I enjoyed this movie, even though it took me a while to get into it. It had great comedic moments, and awesome stunts. I'm glad the previews didn't give away all the good details. I still can't believe Melissa McCarthy is the same woman that played Sookie, she did great. This movie was also a good teaching tool, on how to protect yourself from identity theft. DON'T GIVE OUT YOUR INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE (or internet). This movie didn't get the best reviews online, but hey, it's only your opinion that matters.

I give this movie a 4 out of 5 stars.

Movie Review Monday: Friends With Kids

Friends With Kids (2012)

Synopsis: Jennifer Westfeldt wrote, directed, and stars in the romantic comedy Friends With Kids. She plays Julie, a Manhattanite whose biological clock is about to run out, so she convinces her longtime platonic best friend, Jason (Adam Scott) to father a child with her.
They seem to have a much easier time juggling the responsibilities of new parenthood without the complication of being in a relationship with each other, which is in contrast to the two couples they are closest to. As their friends' marriages implode, Julie and Jason's happy equilibrium topples over as well when he falls for a hot young artist (Megan Fox) and she begins dating a successful businessman (Edward Burns). (From Fandango)

Tanisha's Review: This movie was quite funny, but predictable. But I think that's what had me so into it. I have a crude sense of humor, so all the "vulgar" language did not bother me. Friends With Kids is that one film that is so bad, that it's great. I don't see it winning any Grammy's, but it's good for relaxing on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

Jennifer Westfield was a little awkward, I'll admit that. But this movie really depicts some of the struggles that comes with having children accurately. My favorite couple were the two that was also in Bridesmaids, hilarious. And my favorite part had to be the ending, but I won't ruin it for you. You'll just have to watch to find out.

I give this movie a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Movie Review Monday: To Rome With Love, Movie Review

To Rome With Love (2012)

Synopsis: In Woody Allen's ensemble comedy To Rome With Love, various lives intersect in the Italian city. The characters include architect John (Alec Baldwin), a young man (Jesse Eisenberg) in love with his girlfriend's best friend, an opera director (Woody Allen) who finds an undiscovered talent in an unexpected place, and Leopoldo (Roberto Benigni), who inadvertently becomes one of the most famous people in Rome. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi (From Fandango)

Tanisha's Review: I absolutely enjoyed this movie. Very entertaining. As the title says, it takes  place in Rome, Italy and the movie has a lot in italian, but don't worry, there are subtitles. Woody Allen is quite hilarious, and had a great cast also. Featuring: Penelope Cruz (who I didn't know spoke fluent italian), Alec Baldwin, Jesse Eisenberg(The Social Network), and others that just did an amazing job.

I'm not as familiar as everyone else on the subject of Woody Allen movies, but I can tell he's a comedic genius. I loved how they followed the couples as they experience their relationships like real-life couples do. The jokes don't go over your head, and you get to experience a little bit of Roman culture. So if the fact that it's a Woody Allen film doesn't encourage you, let Rome as the backdrop try.

You even get free relationship advice.

I give this movie 4 out of 5 stars.

Why Don't Movies Live Up To Their Books?

By Tanisha F.

Film adaptations. A lot of times when I hear books are being turned into movies, I just cringe. Never have I thought a movie did a book justice, including movies like Harry Potter, Twilight, and recently The Perks of Being a Wallflower. After that, it hit me, why don't movies satisfy me like books do?  I mean, it's the same book but in visual form right?

Well, yes and no. Books are written by Authors, while movies are written by Screenwriters. Sometimes the screenwriters are the actual author, but most of the time it's not.

So these are the few reasons that I've came up with on why I'm never as pleased with the movie.

1. My interpretation. When I read a book, I see things in a certain way. Directors, Producers and Screenwriters can't possibly know how I imagined the character to act, speak or behave. You can say a boy with a ball, and I'll think of a little rockstar kid, with purple hair and big blue eyes. But someone else may think of something different.

2. The MPAA, or Motion Picture Association of America. A lot of times movies have to be watered down so that the intended audience can still view them. For example, Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1. According to Digital Spy, "The British Board of Film Classification advised producers to edit the 'graphic sight of Edward thrusting while he lies on top of Bella' to avoid the film being given a 15 certificate." Meaning, instead of being PG-13, they were going to give the movie a rating of R. The producers had no choice but to change the story, because the books were meant for the young adult audiences.

3. The time lapse. If the producers kept every detail of the book in the movie, we'd be in the movies all day. Most filmmakers have a budget they must stick to, and the more they shoot, the more they pay. True fans of a book knows exactly what part is missing from the movie and will point it out. I know I did in Harry Potter. I remember once I screamed out, "that's not how it happened in the book!"

4. Discouragement. Once people find out that book is turning into a movie, they tend to not want to actually read the book. As you can tell, I am a reader. And as a reader, it truly disappoints me when someone young says, "why read it when I can just see the movie?"

I'm not too excited to see that E.L. Jame's Fifty Shades of Grey or Colleen Hoover's Slammed series will be turned into a movie. But I guess if you really support an author, you should go check out the adaptations.

It may be possible to create a good movie from the book, and when it happens, I'll be happy.
